Trusted. Molecular. Recycling.

Breaking PET plastic back to its original molecules.

Teryx produces recycled terephthalic acid (rTPA) and ethylene glycol (rEG) from post-consumer PET waste - the chemical building blocks your manufacturing process already runs on. We are building East Africa's first enzymatic PET recycling company, from Kisumu, Kenya.

Why this matters

The recycled content your procurement team needs does not exist yet in East Africa. We are building it.

Mechanical PET recycling produces a downgraded material. It cannot substitute for virgin-grade terephthalic acid in most textile and packaging applications. Manufacturers who buy it accept a quality compromise. Many do not.

Meanwhile, mandatory recycled content targets are arriving faster than compliant supply. Brand owners, legislation, and procurement policies are requiring manufacturers to source recycled feedstocks that meet specification. The supply chain is not ready.

East Africa generates significant volumes of PET waste every year - bottles, packaging, film. Almost none of it is chemically recycled today. Most downcycles into lower-grade material, reaches a landfill, or ends up in the ocean. The feedstock exists. The technology to convert it into something manufacturers can actually use is what Teryx is building.

How it works

Enzymatic chemistry returns PET to the molecules it started from.

Unlike mechanical recycling, which melts and reshapes plastic, Teryx uses enzymes to break PET polymer chains at the molecular level. The result is terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol - the same monomers that go into making new PET. The same molecules your suppliers sell you today as virgin material.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Collect

Post-consumer PET bottles and packaging, sourced from Kenya's waste collection network. Feedstock origin, grade, and contamination levels are documented at intake.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Prepare

Feedstock is cleaned, sorted, and prepared for enzymatic treatment. Pre-treatment improves the surface area available to the enzyme and drives conversion efficiency.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Depolymerise

Enzymes break the PET polymer chains, returning the material to its constituent monomers: terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG). No high-temperature chemical bath. No aggressive solvents.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Purify

The monomers are separated and purified. Product quality is confirmed by HPLC and UV-Vis analysis before each batch proceeds to certification.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Certify and deliver

rTPA and rEG are delivered with a Certificate of Analysis and full chain-of-custody documentation, from feedstock collection point to delivered product.

Teryx is currently at research and development stage (TRL 1). Commercial supply is targeted from 2027 following bench and pilot validation. Product claims on this page describe the design target of the Teryx process; they will be confirmed by Certificate of Analysis upon completion of bench experiments at JKUAT.

For manufacturers

Recycled content that works in your production line.

No specification compromise.

Enzymatic depolymerisation returns PET to its monomers. rTPA is a chemical building block, not a recycled polymer - it enters your production process at the same point as the virgin TPA you already purchase. No retrofitting. No quality step-down. No explaining to your customer why the product is different.

Verifiable Kenyan origin.

Every batch comes with chain-of-custody documentation tracking feedstock from collection point through to the delivered product. Your sustainability and procurement teams get what they need for Scope 3 reporting without building the evidence chain themselves. Kenyan PET origin is a traceable, documentable claim.

Co-development partnerships - open now.

We are taking early supply partnership discussions now, ahead of commercial scale in 2027. If your procurement team is planning for recycled content targets in the next two to three years, this is the right time to talk. We co-design the product specification with our early partners - your process requirements shape what we build toward.

For waste collectors and generators

You collect PET waste. We turn it into something valuable.

Manufacturers, institutions, and waste collectors across Kenya generate post-consumer PET every day - bottles, packaging, film. Until now, most of it has gone one of two places: mechanical processors who pay very little for a downgraded output, or informal disposal routes that end in landfill or waterways.

Teryx offers a third option: a documented, long-term offtake partnership for post-consumer PET, processed through enzymatic chemistry into high-value recycled monomers. Your waste becomes a raw material. It stays traceable. And the value it generates stays in Kenya.

Who should talk to us.

  • Manufacturing facilities with PET packaging waste streams.
  • Hotels, institutions, schools, and event venues generating post-consumer PET at scale.
  • County governments and municipalities managing PET waste infrastructure.
  • Waste collection networks and aggregators already moving PET through the informal sector.
  • Corporate sustainability teams looking for a documented PET diversion pathway in their Kenya operations.

What working with Teryx means for you.

  • A reliable, documented channel for your post-consumer PET - not an informal arrangement.
  • Chain-of-custody records so your waste diversion is verifiable and reportable.
  • Partnership with a company building toward long-term commercial purchase agreements as we scale.
  • The knowledge that your PET becomes a usable material, not a statistic in a landfill report.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What does Teryx Biotech do?

We are building East Africa's first enzymatic PET recycling company, from Kisumu, Kenya. Teryx uses enzymes to break PET polymer chains at the molecular level. The result is terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol - the same monomers that go into making new PET.

How is enzymatic recycling different from mechanical recycling?

Mechanical recycling melts and reshapes PET. Each processing cycle degrades the polymer chains. Enzymatic depolymerisation is different. Enzymes break the polymer at its chemical bonds, returning the material to terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol - the original monomers. The output is not recycled plastic. It is a recycled chemical building block.

What are rTPA and rEG?

Recycled terephthalic acid (rTPA) and ethylene glycol (rEG) are the chemical building blocks your manufacturing process already runs on. rTPA is a chemical building block, not a recycled polymer - it enters your production process at the same point as the virgin TPA you already purchase.

What stage is Teryx at?

Teryx is currently at research and development stage (TRL 1). Our first bench experiments begin at JKUAT in Q4 2026. Commercial supply is targeted from 2027 following bench and pilot validation.

Can manufacturers start a supply partnership now?

We are taking early supply partnership discussions now, ahead of commercial scale in 2027. We co-design the product specification with our early partners - your process requirements shape what we build toward.

How can waste collectors and generators work with Teryx?

Teryx offers a documented, long-term offtake partnership for post-consumer PET, processed through enzymatic chemistry into high-value recycled monomers. If you manage PET waste at a facility, municipality, or collection network in Kenya, register your interest as a feedstock partner.

Why is Teryx based in Kenya?

Teryx builds in Kenya because this is where the problem is, where the feedstock is, and where the first buyers are.
