About Teryx

Enzymatic PET recycling, built for East Africa.

01

Why we exist.

Kenya and East Africa generate significant volumes of post-consumer PET plastic every year. Bottles, packaging, film. The informal collection network is active - waste pickers, aggregators, and processors move this material every day. But what happens to it is a problem.

Most PET that is collected in this region is mechanically processed into a downgraded material that cannot substitute for virgin feedstocks in demanding applications. A significant proportion reaches landfill or the ocean.

Teryx was founded on a specific observation: the feedstock exists, the market for the product exists - the technology link between them does not. Not in East Africa. Enzymatic depolymerisation of PET is not a new concept. Several companies in Europe and North America are developing it at scale. No one is doing it here, from feedstocks collected here, for manufacturers in this region and beyond. That is the gap Teryx is closing.

"The feedstock exists. The market for the product exists. The technology link between them is what we are building."

02

Why enzymatic chemistry.

Mechanical recycling melts and reshapes PET. It is faster and cheaper at small scale, but the output is limited. Each processing cycle degrades the polymer chains. The material that comes out cannot be used in applications where virgin-grade terephthalic acid would have been used.

Enzymatic depolymerisation is different. Enzymes break the polymer at its chemical bonds, returning the material to terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol - the original monomers. The output is not recycled plastic. It is a recycled chemical building block. It enters the manufacturing chain at the same point as virgin material. That is the specification difference that unlocks the market.

"The output is not recycled plastic. It is a recycled chemical building block."

03

Why Kenya.

Kenya has a growing PET bottling and packaging sector, an active informal waste collection network, and strong university research departments with established chemistry and biotechnology programmes. The cost environment for early-stage R&D is appropriate for a company at our stage.

The buyers Teryx needs to reach first include Kenyan bottlers, packaging manufacturers, and export processing zone textile manufacturers - many of whom already source raw materials internationally and have direct visibility of recycled content mandates arriving from their brand-owner customers. We are not going to them with a concept imported from elsewhere. We are going to them as their local supply partner, built for the same market they operate in.

Teryx builds in Kenya because this is where the problem is, where the feedstock is, and where the first buyers are.

What we are building toward.

Teryx's goal is to become the primary supplier of recycled terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol to manufacturers in East Africa - producing from locally collected PET waste, certified to the specification buyers require, and delivering with the traceability documentation that modern procurement demands.

We are currently at research and development stage. Our first bench experiments begin at JKUAT in Q4 2026. We are precise about where we are, because precision is the foundation of the trust our buyers, partners, and investors place in us.
